Mile High Plant Care TIPS for high-altitude plant success:

  • Light: Most high-elevation-friendly plants prefer bright, indirect light. Watch for intensified UV — diffuse harsh afternoon sun with sheer curtains.

  • Watering: Although air IS drier at altitude, water less frequently than you might think and allow soil to dry between waterings, especially for succulents. Overwatering is the most common killer.

  • Humidity: If you want humidity-loving species, group plants, use pebble trays, or run a humidifier. Otherwise choose naturally dry-tolerant species listed above.

  • Soil and drainage: Use the soil mix! Some prefer well-draining mixes. Add perlite or pumice for succulents. Ensure pots have drainage holes to avoid root rot or certain death.

  • Temperature: Most indoor plants prefer daytime temps 65–75°F and cooler nights; avoid placing plants near cold drafts of that Colorado COLD or heating vents that dry them out.

  • Fertilizer: Feed sparingly during the growing season (spring–summer). Go organic! Too much fertilizer can stress plants already dealing with high-UV light. Too little and your plants will be slow growers.

  • Acclimation: Move plants slowly to brighter conditions to avoid sunburned leaves — acclimate over one to two weeks. Brighter conditions can mean your plant will need more frequent waterings.

  • Pest vigilance: Dry indoor air can concentrate pests like spider mites. Inspect new plants and treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Fungus gnats are the result of over watering or poor soil mixture, keep an eye out and treat early!
